JOBHUNT (tm) Tutorial
+++++++++++++++++++++
Copyright (c) 1989--1992, Scope International. Phone: (704)535-0614
CONGRATULATIONS!
---------------
You are looking at a powerful Job-Search tool that will help you
tremendously -- JOBHUNT (tm) by Scope International. This is the
shareware version that works very similarly to the actual JOBHUNT,
but can be thought of as a scaled down model of the real thing. This
is explained in detail later. The idea is that you can try this
edition without any risk, and then if you believe that it can help
you, you can buy the full edition either at a retail store or
directly from Scope. Feel free to copy and distribute this edition
as long as you do not make any changes or modifications to it.
Job-Seekers use JOBHUNT to look for a new job, or to find a better
------------------------------------------------------------------
job. Employment Related Services use it to increase their revenues.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
More on that later.
------------------
Here is how JOBHUNT helps you:
1. Saves you a lot of time, researching effort and money by
giving you a databank of potential employers nationwide.
JOBHUNT gives addresses, phone numbers, brief company
profiles and even fax numbers and names of the hiring
authorities (where available). The commercial version has a
databank much larger than the one found on this edition.
Plus, it is more current.
2. Makes your job-search more effective by giving you the
ability to search by Region and/or Job-Function.
3. The commercial version includes a powerful word processor.
Type your own cover letter, follow-up letter (or any letter)
and quickly mail-merge it with the info in the databank.
Fast-print personalized letters for targeted mass-mailings
of your resumes. Very convenient when you are pressed for
time. Extremely easy to use.
4. You can add your own addresses to the existing databank. If
you are replying to newspaper help-wanted ads, type them all
in and quickly do a mass mailing in one shot. If you have a
list of local businesses (obtainable from the Chamber of
Commerce or Campus Placement Office) you can type it in
yourself, and print letters, labels and envelopes to them
also. On the commercial version, you can add an unlimited
number of your own records as long as you have disk space
Page 1 of 9
available. On this edition, that number is restricted to
100. However, you can delete some and add more once you
reach the limit of 100 on this edition.
5. JOBHUNT prints mailing labels, self addressed return labels
and envelopes to further cut down on the time needed to do a
mass mailing. Gives your mailings a professional touch.
How do you as a Job-Seeker, benefit from JOBHUNT?
------------------------------------------------
A successful job-search depends heavily on the law of averages. The
more applications you can send, and the better you can target them,
the higher your chances of landing the right job. JOBHUNT puts the
law of averages on your side. JOBHUNT helps you get a JOB!
How do you, as an Employment-Related Service benefit from JOBHUNT?
-----------------------------------------------------------------
a. Employment agencies use it for prospecting.
b. Resume services use it to serve their clients better, and
increase their revenues at the same time. Prior to JOBHUNT,
a resume service would have sold only a resume. Now, they
can do a mass-mailing for their clients, sell a large number
of photocopies of the resumes, a large number of cover
letters, follow-up letters, envelopes and labels.
c. Quick-Print shops increase their revenues by renting
computers on their premises to users who want to use JOBHUNT
themselves.
d. Book and list publishers can contact Scope for a special
edition of JOBHUNT to go with their own book or list. If
the user wants to use the book, they have the book. But if
they want to print letters then they have the disk which
contains the same information that is found in the book.
The book publisher can sell the disk separately, or boost
their book sales by attaching the disk inside the back
cover.
e. All of the above, can become authorized dealers for JOBHUNT.
You can make volume purchases at attractive discounts, and
re-sell JOBHUNT for a profit.
What else do you get when you order?
-----------------------------------
You get a more powerful program with a larger and more current
databank; A full featured, built-in word-processor; Unrestricted
databank size allowed in the "Additional List"; A complete, printed
manual and the FAMOUS BOX with the caricature of a man in a blue suit

bursting through the classifieds. You are also entitled to ONE FREE
UPDATE. All of this for only $49.95. Shipping & Handling $4.95 for
each JOBHUNT shipped to USA or Canada. International Air-Mail
Shipping & Handling U.S. $15.00 only.

only 360-K of RAM. A single floppy drive is all you need. Hard disk
or modem is NOT required. =========

The information contained in JOBHUNT is gathered through independent
library research, newspapers, magazines, business journals, trade
indices, other publications, mailing lists, direct input from
employers/employment agencies, surveys and various other sources.
These sources change constantly, and are too numerous to list
individually.

This tutorial is designed to be used in conjunction with the printed
user's manual that you will receive when you order the actual
JOBHUNT. It covers many topics that are not included in the manual.
By the same token, there is a lot of information in the manual that
is not included in this tutorial. They both work together.
Let us assume that you are doing a mailing to potential employers.
We shall now go through all the steps involved--one at a time.
Preparation: (Printing the Employer List)
-----------
Printing of the Employer List is optional, but recommended. You may
skip this stage for now, but we do recommend that you come back to it
later.
Load JOBHUNT by placing the disk in the A-drive. When the screen is
showing A:\>, type JOBHUNT and hit <Return>.
On the next sub-menu, read the screen carefully. Then, without
pressing any other keys (since you are printing the entire list)
press the function key <F10>. Make sure that your printer is in the
draft mode (unless you have a very high speed printer) because you
will be printing approximately 150 pages. We recommend continuous
(form-feed) paper. This may seem like a lot to print, but you will
be happy you did. The printout that you get will have blank lines
for making notes of your job-search progress, and will serve as a
useful progress-monitoring tool once the action heats up.
1. Once you are back on the Main Menu again, choose Option 1,
VIEW/SEARCH/ADD employers:
JOBHUNT stores the employer information in two different files.
One is the "Scope International List" of employers that you get
with your program. The other is the "Additional List" of
employers that you create yourself by entering addresses from
Help-Wanted Ads, Chamber of Commerce List of Local Businesses, a
list that you may obtain from a College Placement Office, etc.
You can print letters, labels and envelopes to any or all of the
addresses in either list.
a. After selecting Option 1 on the Main-Menu you will see a
sub-menu. You can jump from field to field on this sub-menu
by pressing the <Tab> key, or by using the Up and Down Arrow
keys. Do not use <Return> (same as <Enter>) key here to
jump from field to field, as on some fields <Return> will
open a window for additional choices. Try it! For example,
if you are on the first line of the sub-menu that says:
Address List:
then hitting <Return> will pop a window to select between
"Scope International" list and "Additional List". You can
Page 4 of 9
now either scroll up and down with the arrow key to pick the
list of your choice and hit <Return> now to accept, or type
the first letter of either line to pick your list, or just
press <Esc> to undo any changes, enter the default value and
go back to the sub-menu. However, if you had just used
<Tab> to jump to the next field then the default value of
"Scope International" list would have been accepted as your
choice. This is all very easy and intuitive, and will become
an automatic response after running the program for a few
minutes. For the purpose of this exercise, let us select
the Scope International List.
========================
b. Similarly, when you are on the line that says:
Search Option:
then pressing <Tab> will accept the default value of "All"
(meaning you want to process the whole list). However, if
you hit <Return> it will pop open a window asking you to
decide whether you want to process "All", "By Region", "By
Job-Function" or "Combined". Combined refers to a
cross-search by BOTH region and job-function. You may type
A, R, J or C, or scroll down the list using the arrow keys
and press <Return> to accept your choice. Or, you may press
<Esc> to escape to the sub-menu and enter a default of
"All".
c. You can pick the Region or Job-Function in a similar manner.
However, on this sub-menu the "Region:" and "Job-Function:"
fields will get skipped if you choose "All" under the
"Search Option:". For the purpose of this exercise, let us
select Combined.
========
d. When you are on the "Region:" field, hit <Return> to pop
open a window, and for the purpose of this exercise, select
the region of South-East, Texas & Gulf:
========================
e. On the "Job Function:" field, hit <Return> to pop-open a
window, and select Marketing / Sales:
=================
f. On the next two fields "Start at Company:" and "End at
Company:" you can either type one alphabet where you want to
start and end searching, or up to the first five letters in
the name of a company. The records are arranged
alphabetically by name of company.
(i) For example, if you wanted to start searching at
General Motors and stop at Xerox corporation, you
would start at GENER and end at XEROX.
(ii) If you were printing a label or letter to only one
Page 5 of 9
company Xerox, then you would start AND end at Xerox
by entering the same word XEROX in both fields.
(iii) Suppose, you are viewing the list and discover that
there are three companies under Xerox. This could
happen if more than one location of the same company
is listed. Or, let us say that you begin at GENER
(similar to 1.f.(ii) above) and end at GENER but
still find more than one company. This could happen
if there is a General Foods listed along with a
General Motors. Furthermore, let us assume that you
want to send a letter to only one of them, and not
all. How do you do it? Easy! Just scroll down the
list and press 'L' to Lock the addresses that you do
not wish to write to. Now, when you go to option 4
on the Main Menu (FAST PRINT Personalized LETTERS),
your locked (Non-Printable) addresses will get
skipped, and you won't print any letters to them.
For now, let us leave the default values 'A' and 'Z' unchanged.
====================================
Important: Both of the address lists are arranged alphabetically by
========= name of company (Primary Key). If you are adding
addresses in the Additional List, they will automatically
get arranged alphabetically by the name of company.
However, let us say that you are creating a databank of
your personal contacts, and adding a friend's address for
whom you do not enter the name of a company. Any time a
record is encountered that has a blank for a company
name, it gets sorted alphabetically by the Last Name of
the person (Secondary Key).
Moreover, let us assume that this friend's last name is
JOHNSON. Since you do not have the name of a company for
this record it will be sorted based on the secondary key
(last name) instead of primary key (company name). Thus,
this record may be found after the hypothetical company
named INNOVATION ('J' comes after 'I') and before the
hypothetical company KERMIT ('J' comes before 'K');
g. The next field says "Count Records and View Summary:". We
can come back and do a count later by typing 'Y' for Yes,
but for now let us keep the default value of 'N' (for No)
unchanged. ============================
=========
2. If you followed all the steps above correctly, you will now see a
screen with some records on it. There will be a company name,
address, phone number and a brief company profile for each
record. A name of a person in the Personnel/Human Resources
Department and a fax number may also be included where available.
You may process this list as follows:
a. Scroll up and down the list one address at a time by using
the arrow keys.
b. Scroll up and down the list three addresses at a time by
using the <PgUp> or <PgDn> keys.
c. Go to the beginning or end of the list by using <Home> and
<End> keys.
d. The middle record is always the current record. There are a
number of things that you can do to this current record as
stated on the bottom line of your screen. You may Lock the
middle address on the screen by pressing 'L'. This changes
it to non-printable. The display changes from a
non-blinking "Unlocked (Printable) Address" to a blinking
"Locked (Non-Printable) Address". The locked address does
not get erased but stays on file. However, at the time of
printing letters or labels, any Locked (Non-Printable)
addresses will get skipped, and will NOT print.
e. If you were viewing the "Additional List" instead of the
"Scope International List" then you could also type 'A' to
Add a record, 'E' to Edit the current (middle) record or 'R'
to Remove and permanently delete it. For added safety,
deleting and editing is not available on the Scope List
because many people use JOBHUNT at Campus Placement offices
or on rented computers at quick-print shops. If a user came
in and accidentally deleted some records, then the next user
would have no way of knowing it. Thus, not being able to
change the Scope List means added safety for everyone.
Note that you can add records to your Additional List in two ways.
First, directly from the screen where you are viewing the list--just
by pressing 'A'. Second, by selecting option 1 on the Main Menu,
then selecting the Additional List, and then selecting "Add" from the
small window that pops open after you select the Additional List.
f. When you are finished viewing the list, press <Esc> to go
back to the Main Menu.
3. Now, let us press 3 on the Main Menu to go to the word-processor.
This screen is self-explanatory.
4. Next, choose option 4 on the Main Menu, FAST-PRINT Personalized
Letters:
We shall now personalize a letter and fast-print it to send it to
a few employers--just for practice.
a. Repeat steps 1.a. thru 1.f. above. The net result is that
you will be searching in the Southeast, Texas & Gulf Region,
under Marketing / Sales, for companies with names A to Z.
b. Unlike what we did in 1.g., let us type 'Y' for "Count
Records and View Summary:". This will tell us how many
addresses were found.
Note: This step (counting) is recommended at the letter-printing
==== stage (and also when printing labels or envelopes) because the
count will tell you how many sheets of paper, labels or
envelopes you will need. The number of sheets of paper that
you will need will be at least one more than the number of
addresses found because at the end of the letter-printing
operation JOBHUNT will also print a report for you with
information on who you sent what letter to and when. The
extra page(s) will be used up by the report.
This report can be used for future reference as follows:
(i) If you are sending letters in batches, such as to
companies A thru D now, and E thru F later, etc.,
this report will be a handy tool to have. It will
also bring to light any addresses that you may have
Locked and forgotten about. You will need this
report at the time of printing your labels or
envelopes if you want your labels or envelopes to
match your letters one-to-one in the same sequence.
(ii) If you are sending follow-up letters, this report
will help you identify who received what letter and
when. Employment services who do mailings for their
clients (for a fee) find this report invaluable.
They keep a copy of the report on their files and
give the client the original. Two weeks later they
can follow up with the client by mail or phone to see
if the client would like for them to do a follow-up
letter. When you realize that each employment
service can have clients in the hundreds or thousands
for whom they are doing the mailings, the importance
of this report becomes easily evident.
c. After following the instructions on the screen you will
eventually come to a pick-list of letter files. You can
scroll through it and select the file called SAMPLE.LET. As
explained in the user's manual you can also use with JOBHUNT
any letter files that you create on other ASCII word-
processors. However, there are some rules to be followed.
You will learn more about this when you get the actual
manual.
d. Now, you will come to a screen that allows you to do a
number of things such as change margins, date on the letter,
and salutation. For the sake of this exercise, let us just
press <F10> to accept all default values.
e. The printer will now print one letter, pause to let you
check if all the settings are correct, and then print the
Page 8 of 9
entire range of letters without pausing again. At the end,
it will also print a report as mentioned above.
5. Now, choose option 5 on the Main Menu, PRINT ADDRESS-LABELS/
ENVELOPES:
You can print Self-Addressed Return Labels, Employers' Address
Labels, Combination Return and Mailing Labels (prints one
self-addressed then one employer's label, and so on) or Pin-Feed
(continuous) Envelopes. You may contact Scope to order these
highly professional-looking continuous (pin-feed) envelopes that
will save you a lot of time and effort because you will not have
to stick labels on them.
6. Please feel free to print the Order form for your friends using
option 6 on the Main Menu. Please order the most recent edition
directly from Scope. Don't delay. Some large companies can take
up to three months to make a hiring decision. Order today!
7. Type 7 to exit JOBHUNT. We hope that you have enjoyed this
exercise, and will find JOBHUNT to be a very useful tool. Please
contact Scope International by phone or fax if you have any
suggestions, or if we can be of any more service.
